How it started

The “$399” Trap

Upon purchasing a new home just outside of Saint Louis. Perry and his family noticed an unappealing smell coming from the air vents in their new home. They were encouraged by a friend that owns a very successful heating and cooling company to have the air ducts cleaned. A quick search resulted in one of the area’s highest rated companies, they also had a “$399” whole house cleaning that was being promoted.

Once hired to do the job, the details of the “$399 Whole Air Duct Cleaning” came out. The $399 strictly included only 1 of the return vents (of which their were two more), and absolutely none of the supply vents (16 in total throughout the house).

The cost of each additional return was unveiled to be $50 per duct ($100 extra), but the real kick to the wallet was the $25 per supply vent ($400 extra). So our $399 quickly became $899 plus tax and additional fees. The owner was “kind enough” to reduce the total cost down to $850.

In the end, it did reduce the offensive smell from the HVAC system. However, the feeling of knowing that this was a common occurrence from most companies in this industry felt wrong. Perry decided to break this trend and provide open and honest pricing that truly included the Whole House in the service.
